In providing hundreds of families with cranial remolding support to address issues related to the shape and development of their baby’s skull, PBO Group’s Clinicians often receive questions from parents about the effectiveness of head-shaping pillows. Our advice boils down to four simple words: pass on the pillows.
In addition to not being effective, head-shaping pillows can present real risks to the safety of babies. Both the Government of Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommend against the use of these products.
What To Do Instead Of Buying A Head-Shaping Pillow
If you’re having concerns about the shape of your baby’s head, rather than buying a head-shaping pillow, browse the FAQs listed on the Cranial Remolding section of our PBO Group website as a first step.
If you still have concerns, book an appointment, and bring your baby in for a head assessment to one of our PBO Group clinic locations in Toronto, Peterborough, Niagara, Barrie, or Owen Sound. As treatment of flat head syndrome is time-sensitive, we encourage caregivers to book these appointments as soon as possible. There will be no charge for your baby’s initial assessment, and we do not require a doctor’s referral to see your child. Simply make an appointment.
Once your baby’s assessment is complete, your PBO Group Clinician will explain the required next steps, including how to get a prescription from your doctor and access funding support if a helmet solution is needed. Our team will also take the time to answer any questions you may have and provide you with suggested exercises and activities you can do at home with your baby to strengthen the muscles associated with healthy skull development. If you’d like to get a head start on those exercises and activities, check out this blog post.
